The St. Margarets Bay Marine Search and Rescue Society (SMBMSAR) is a dedicated charitable organization committed to enhancing marine safety and providing vital search and rescue services in the St. Margarets Bay region of Nova Scotia, Canada.
Founded by a group of passionate volunteers and marine enthusiasts, the Society addresses the critical need for quick and effective response services in a region known for its stunning coastlines and vibrant boating community.
Mission and Objectives
The primary mission of SMBMSAR is to provide prompt and professional marine search and rescue operations, ensuring the safety of all individuals navigating the waterways of St. Margarets Bay. The Society's key objectives include:
1. Emergency Response: To respond rapidly to marine emergencies and coordinate rescue efforts to save lives and minimize property loss.
2. Training and Preparedness: To provide training programs for volunteers and the local community in first aid, navigation, and emergency preparedness, ensuring that both responders and the public are equipped to handle emergencies.
3. Community Engagement: To raise awareness about marine safety and educate the public on safe boating practices, fostering a culture of safety among boaters.
4. Fundraising and Support: To generate funding through charitable donations, grants, and community events to support operational costs, training programs, and the acquisition of necessary equipment.
5. Interagency Relationships: SMBMSAR has developed long standing partnerships with local emergency services such are fire, police, and ambulance services. SMBMSAR also works with the Canadian Coast Guard auxiliary and Canadian Coast Guard.
Volunteer Effort
Critical to the success of SMBMSAR is its team of dedicated volunteers, who come from diverse backgrounds, including maritime professionals, outdoor enthusiasts, and community members. These volunteers undergo rigorous training to prepare for potential search and rescue situations, ensuring they are capable of responding to emergencies with confidence and skill. The Society also actively invites participation from the community, encouraging individuals to become involved in fundraising activities, training sessions, and awareness campaigns.
Equipment and Facilities
The St. Margarets Bay Marine Search and Rescue Society was operating with one boat equipped with the latest technology and safety gear, enabling them to conduct efficient search and rescue missions.
Recently the Zodiac 755 RecPro the society used was lost during negotiation to fully purchase it, leaving the society scrambling to acquire a new vessel to ensure boater safety continues.
The Society’s facilities serve as a base for training and operational activities, and they are maintained through the generous support of local businesses and community members.
Community Involvement and Fundraising
SMBMSAR thrives on community support. The Society organizes various fundraising events, such as charity runs, community barbecues, and silent auctions, to raise funds for their operations. Additionally, they collaborate with local businesses and organizations to secure sponsorships and donations that enhance their capacity to provide timely and effective services.
The St. Margarets Bay Marine Search and Rescue Society stands as a vital pillar of marine safety in the region. Through volunteerism, community engagement, corporate sponsorship and a steadfast commitment to excellence in service, the Society ensures that everyone can enjoy the beautiful waters of St. Margarets Bay with peace of mind. By supporting SMBMAR, community members participate in safeguarding lives and promoting a safer marine environment for all.
